Orange-cap boletes

Leccinum sp.

Of mushrooms, the Skolt Sámi ate above all the orange birch bolete and the pine bolete.

The orange-cap boletes are big and solid edibles. Their stem is long and white, but the colour of the cap varies by the species. The orange birch bolete (Leccinum versipelle) has an orange cap and the pine bolete (Leccinum vulpinum) a reddish brown one. The orange-cap boletes grow in partnership with the root of a tree. The picking season lasts from August to September. To avoid stomach-ache, the orange-cap boletes need to be cooked well.
