Invitation to speak at the ”Recalling Ancestral Voices: Repatriation of Sámi Cultural Heritage” project seminar 3–5 October 2007 at the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari, Finland

Background
Like many other indigenous peoples, the Sámi have also raised the question of administering their own cultural heritage in recent decades. The majority of Sámi artefacts or collections are located in museums and institutes outside the traditional Sámi territory, making it difficult for the Sámi to access them. Furthermore, few Sámi even know where the artefacts or collections are at.

The ”Recalling Ancestral Voices: Repatriation of Sámi Cultural Heritage” project commenced in April 2006 and will end in November 2007. During the project, surveys on collections of Sámi artefacts in Finland, Sweden and Norway were carried out. The results of the survey are being used to create a database that all three of the Sámi Museums that participated in the project will have access to. In turn, the database is being used to make a web browser, which will be made available to the general public at the end of the year.

Seminar
A project seminar will be held at the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari, Finland 3–5 October 2007. The seminar programme has been enclosed with this invitation. As the programme is preliminary, changes are still possible.

The seminar lectures and presentations will discuss cultural heritage repatriation from the points of view of researchers, politicians, museum professionals and artisans. Its objective is to raise questions about the conservation of Sámi artefacts and the good administration of the cultural heritage of the Sámi in the future. The seminar will also discuss the results of the ongoing project that has been focussing on collecting the material cultural heritage of the Sámi.

Practicalities
The seminar will be simultaneously interpreted into Northern Sámi and English, so we request that you kindly send us a written copy of your presentation in advance so we can send it on to our interpreters. Please send your presentation by e-mail to eeva-kristiina.harlin@samimuseum.fi no later than 28 September 2007.

Registration
Registration will open on Tuesday, 2 October 2007, at 4 p.m. at the Sámi Museum Siida. The museum’s collections are open for viewing on that day until 8 p.m. A guided tour in English will start at 5 p.m. Registration will also be open the following day from 8.30 on.

Language
The official languages of the seminar are Finnish, Northern Sámi and English. Simultaneous interpreting will be available for these languages.

Travel arrangements
The seminar will cover the travel expenses of its lecturers and, if necessary, lodging expenses from the time of the seminar. As the seminar has a limited budget, we would appreciate it if the lecturers’ employers would cover their employees’ per diem expenses and preferably their lodging expenses, too. If this is not possible, however, the seminar will cover them.

The easiest way to get to Inari is to fly from Helsinki to Ivalo, which is located approximately 40 km from Inari. The Sámi Museum will arrange transportation from Ivalo Airport, so we request that you notify us of the arrival and departure times of your flights.
