Chives

Allium schoenoprasum

The chives can be used as such with fresh fish – salmon and fish liver, for example. Earlier, people used to put chives inside salted cod heads before cooking them. The stems and leaves of the chives should be picked before the flower blooms, because after the blooming, the stem turns hard.

The chives belongs to the family of lilies and grows about 30 cm high. The basal parts of the leaves are slightly swollen, but the plant does not form an actual onion. The leaves have a strong taste of onion. The chives abounds in energy and is reasonably rich in carbohydrates.
