Lingonberry, red whortleberry, cowberry

Vaccinium vitis-idaea

Crushed lingonberries stay edible for long, as the berry abounds in benzoic acid. Lingonberry leaves that have been roasted brown can be made into good tea. Because of their antiseptic qualities, lingonberries are good for people who suffer from urinary troubles and gout. They improve the function of the stomach, gall bladder and liver. Therefore, it is good to finish a heavy meal by eating lingonberries.

The evergreen lingonberry is one of our most important wild berries. It blooms in June – July, and the berries ripen in September. Lingonberries are common throughout Finland, and they grow on forest soil, lowlands and highland moors. They abound in fibre and minerals.
