Language Books and Dictionaries

Enare-Lappischen Dialekt.
A book, rather an article, by Elias Lönnrot which is by its age the oldest. It was published in1854 and written in German, though there is a relatively large amount of Inari Sámi, such as on the spelling of verbs and nouns, sentence structure grammar and vocabulary. The book was published as volume 4 in a series in Acta Societatis Scientarum Fennicae.

ompiled by academician  Erkki Itkonen, edited by Lea Laitinen. A vast, four-volume dicionary, three of which are volumes of a dictionary; the entries are in Inari Sámi and comments in German. The fourth volume includes examples of spelling. Finnish-Ugric Society, Yliopistopaino Helsinki 1986, 1548 pp.

Säämi-suomâ
sänikirje (Sámi-Finnish Dictionary). Compiled and edited by Pekka Sammallahti and Matti Morottaja. The book has a little over 8000 index entries, as well as spelling examples. Girjegiisá Inc., Ohcejohka 1993. Ykkâs-Offset Inc., Vaasa 1993, 165 pp.

Inarinsaame-suomi-inarinsaame sanakirja (Inari Sámi-Finnish-Inari Sámi Dictionary). Edited by Marja-Lisa Olthuis. The dictionary has appr. 30,000 enties. A trial edition was published in 2006. Sámi Parliament, Oppimateriaalikeskus.

Literature

Inarinlappalaista kansantietoutta (Inari Lappish Folklore). The book was published as a first edition in phonetic letters in 1918 and reprinted, as well as in Erkki Itkonen’s writing style, 61 years later, in 1979. There are stories both in Finnish and Inari Sámi on parallel pages in the book. The book is based on the collected data of A.V. Koskimies in 1886 which Erkki Itkonen has translated into Finnish. Skabmatolak (Tulia in Kaamos). Edited by Samuli Aikio, Erkki Itkonen and Pekka Sammallahti. An anthology of Sámi literature with Inari Sámi, Skolt Sámi and North Sámi language parts. The book has been compiled from previously published stories. There is Finnish text on the left pages and Sámi text on the right pages. Publishing Corporation Otava, Domestic Missionary Society Raamattutalo printers Pieksämäki 1974, 340 pp.

Nieida kote šoodai kollekoalsin (The Girl Who Turned into a Golden Merganser). A children’s book produced by Annukka and Samuli Aikio according to an old story. Translated into Inari Sami from Northern Sami by Matti Morottaja. Universitetsfollaget 1982, Reproforum A/S, Norway, 31 pp.

Halstemjeegi noaidi (The Witch of the Halstamo Bog). A children’s book written by Rauna Paadar Leivo, illustrated by Aletta Ranttila and translated into Inari Sami from Northern Sami by Matti Morottaja. Davvii Girji 1990, Kárášjohka. Vaasa Inc., 30 pp.

Inari Sami Language Samples: Aanaarkielâ čájttuzeh. Edited by Lea Laitinen, data recorded on tape by Erkki Itkonen in 1952 in Inari. The stories in the book are written on parallel pages (Finnish on the left and Inari Sami on the right pages). Finnish-Ugric Society, Vammalan kirjapaino Inc. 1992, 305 pp.

Uáináh-uv (Do You See?). A book of poetry written by Aune Vesa and translated into North Sámi by Ilmari Laiti. The book is illustrated with Martti Rikkonen’s black and white photographs. Girjegiisá 1992, Ohcejohka, Vaasa Inc., 32 pp.

Sabmelaš / Sápmelaš (Sámi) Journal has featured Inari Sámi articles now and then since the magazine first appeared in 1932. The most diligent Inari Sámi writer was “Lesk-AantUulá”, Leski-Antti’s Uula, whose family name was Morottaja. “Sápmelaš” is not being issued at present.

Anarâš
(Inari Sámi) Journal began to appear regularly since 1988 and ever since has included small stories, serial narratives, recollections, novels, children’s stories written and drawn by children themselves, as well as poems and feature stories.

Anarâš kalender (Inari Sámi calander) began to appear in Anarâš Journal issues since 1996. The magazine is published by Anarâškielâ servi Co. (Inari Sámi Language Association Co.), based in the Municipality of Inari.
Sigá maainâs já eres mainâseh (Sigga’s Story and Other Tales). A talking book, published by Suomen Äänikirjat Ab. The stories were read on tape by Matti Morottaja in 1992.

Vuossâmuš škovlâčohčâ
(First Autumn at School). A talking book published by Suomen Äänikirjat Inc. The author of the book, Ilmari Mattus, read the story on tape. This recollection was first published as a series of stories in Anarâš Journal in each issue since 1988. The talking book includes two cassettes and it was published in 1992.

Tivgâ
(Harness Bell). A children’s book written by Kirsti Paltto, translated into Inari Sámi by Matti Morottaja and illustrated by Mika launis. Tivgâ is the first publication of Anarâškielâ Servi Co. The book tells of the friendship between the boy Mikko and a whale. Anarâškielâ Servi Co. Ykkös-Offset Inc., Vaasa 1994, 31 pp.

Tuálu faŋgâ (Prisoner of Frost). A children’s book written by Aune Kuuva and illustrated by Martti Rikkonen. Girjegiisá Co., Ykkös-Offset Inc. 1994, 38 pp.

Sigá maainâs
(Sigga’s Story). Edited by Matti Morottaja, illustrated by Sylvi Rasmus, designed by Hannu Kangasniemi. The stories were compiled from the book Inari Lappish Folklore. Lapin lääninhallitus 1995, 88 pp.

Tuuru-kuobžâ
(Tuuru Bear). A children’s book written by Veikko Holmberg, illustrated by Marja Helander and translated into Inari Sámi by Matti Morottaja. Davvi Girji in1995, Ykkös-Offset Inc., 59 pp.

Čovčjäävrist Kaamâsân Syysjärveltä Kaamaseen. (From Syysjärvi to Kaamanen). A fictional documentary written by Ilmari Mattus. The book was written in Inari Sámi and Finnish. Author’s edition, Tornion Kirjapaino Co. 1996, 204 pp.

Eellimpäälgis
(The Trail of Life). A fictional recollection written by Iisakki Mattus. Anarâškielâ servi Co. Tornion Kirjapaino Co. 1996, 104 pp.

Tovlááh mainâseh
(Ancient Tales). An Inari Sámi anthology edited by Matti Morottaja. There are several narrators featured in this book and it is compiled in part from recordings made by the editor in 1968-70. Other sources are Erkki Itkonen’s collected data  “Aanaarkiela čájttuzeh” (Inari Sámi Language Samples), edited by Lea Laitinen, as well as previous published writings in Sápmelaš and Anarâš Journals. (Something Enchanting). A North Sámi anthology edited by Rauna Kuokkanen, There are Inari Sámi texts besides the North Sámi, Skolt Sámi and Norwegian. Davvi Girji OS. 2001, 95 pp.

(The Ice on the Lakes is Crying). An Inari Sámi collection of texts for adult study edited by Pekka Sammallahti. The notes in the books are in North Sámi. The book is compiled from articles from Anarâš Journal, Sámi Radio Inari Sámi programs, as well as the book “Tovlááh mainâseh”. The book is meant for North Sámi students of Inari Sámi. Kyelisieidi maccâm já eres
novelleh (The Return of the Fish Seita and Other Novels). A collection of novels edited by Matti Morottaja and Ilmari Mattus. There are altogether 14 writers presented and the time period represented in the anthology is about 500 years. Anarâškielâ servi Co. 2005, 305 pp.

Kielâ Säämist (A Sámi Language Book). A three-volume textbook the first volume of which has exercises as well as grammar. The second and third volumes are textbooks and workbooks. Altogether, the textbooks comprise about 300 pages and the workbooks about 200 pages. The textbooks and workbooks were translated from North Sámi into Inari Sámi by Iisak Mattus from Kari Meløy’s book.
